Melbourne-based artist Market releases 2, their sophomore EP featuring the singles Show It and Potential (feat. Poppongene). Effortlessly weaving lo-fi tape production with auto-tuned guitars and washed out synths, the three-track is a short yet fulfilling follow up brimming with Market’s bedroom pop sensibilities.
2 was written and recorded in the iconic Cairo Flats, an Art Deco 1930s residential complex in inner Melbourne, while being deeply locked down during the pandemic and only legally allowed out for an hour a day. Despite the grim circumstances, the lightness of the space is reflected on the EP through its use of breezy-jazz chords and cheap bright drum machines.
Market shared; “2 really felt different to anything else I’d done - it was recorded and mixed in headphones as we were all living on top of each other in the flats and all the studios were closed due to the pandemic. I think there’s a bit of urgency and crowdedness as a result of that which might take a couple of listens for people to unravel, but it’s a sound that I’ve come to really love that reflects this pretty chaotic moment. Like You in particular was written at a time when my BDD wasn’t great and being forced to isolate wasn’t helping. I look back now though and I feel proud of all of us for getting through it - so I wanted to make the video just pretty footage of all the people (and pets) I miss and love.”
It is rare to accidentally discover such an exceptional gem on here. Just when you think electronic music has become exclusively Synthwave, you find an album like this that is full of warmth and good vibes. Nounverber
